Sepia Saturday 375

It has once again been a long time between posts, but I saw this week's prompt and thought I'd share a couple of pics.

I decided to go with the theme of "swimming costume" rather than swimming.

This first picture shows my paternal grandfather Percy (left), sister Muriel and brother Wilf getting a good hosing down on a hot summer's day by their mother Gean.

This photo would have been taken by their father, Percy, at the family farm "Mayfield" near Skipton in the early 1930s.  The kids were born two years apart, starting with my grandfather in 1921.

This second picture shows my maternal grandmother, Elsie.  She is the one with the stunning cap on!  She is in the boat with her father Sam.  I don't know the other men.

This picture was taken at Lake Jollicum which is just south of Streatham in Victoria.  These days it is a 15 minute drive.
I expect this photo to have been taken in the mid 1930s.  My grandmother was born in 1918 and she looks to be a teenager in this photo.

  2. Love the three kids getting hosed down...we, too, used to use a hose in the yard during the summertime, usually with a sprinkler attachment...

  3. I used to hate those swimming caps. They felt horrible and the water always got in anyway. I never wore them when I could help it.

  4. I haven't seen Swimming costumes before like the ones your grandfather, brother and sister were wearing. Like Kristin I hated those caps!

  5. The cap on your grandmother, Emily, may be stunning, but so was Emily! She must have been quite the beauty and she was born in the same year as my mother! In my day girls had to wear swim caps in public pools but there were plenty of choices. I had one with colorful flowers all over, and another with white feathery things all over it. Still, as Kristin says, they didn't really keep the water out or the hair dry, but they were required so - oh well. Might as look as pretty as possible in 'em.

  6. Oops. Sorry. Your grandmother, Elsie. :)

  7. Great photos. We had six years of swimming in the Jr. and Sr. High School days of bouffant hair styles. Those caps were required and sure did ruin the rest of the day.

  8. Getting hosed off in the summer was always something to look forward to. These are wonderful photos.

  9. Love seeing your grandparents as kids and teens. Somehow it reminds me that they had a life before becoming old! Good thing to think about!

  10. A lovely image. The swimming costumes must have been heavy when wet. I like the apron too - mostly the aprons were whipped off when a camera appeared.

  11. I think your grandmother was planning how she'd slip over the side. She wanted a quiet day in the water.

  13. The hose photo brought back great memories for me. I'd forgotten how much fun it was to have someone hose you down...and running through the sprinklers.
The swimming caps were horrible...although I agree with all here, your grandmother would have beautiful with anything on her head.
