Information for my book

Update - 1/10/23

I feel I am making some but steady progress.  I have travelled around the work and back, several times on this journey.  (Plus another move of house, hopefully not another for a while!)  When I have need a break from writing, I have been working on tree charts - some which I would like to include in the book if the pricing is ok.  

By the time I'm done with the initial research / draft, I will have a heap more new records to fill some gaps.  I am finding new people every day.

Update - 9/6/22

I finally finished typing the notes I had written - 4 note books worth and over 90k words... Still haven't got to my direct line yet. I may need to make two volumes!  Full time work and life in general do get in the way of writing.  However, progress is continuing and I have plans now on how I want the finshed product to look.

Update - 26/2/22

Still a work in progress, but it is progressing.  A lot of time has been spent on the chart, typing up notes, researching and finding photos and things of interest.

150 pages in and still going - it will be worth the wait, I just hope people are still interested.

Update - 17/2/21

Well, the book is still a work in progress.  I have decided to cut it back and will not be writing about people born after WWII.  Given the size of the book so far, I am actually thinking of going back to WWI.

There will be a family tree chart included in the book as well.  It is all very exciting, but a long process with work and family thrown into the mix.

It will be done one day, I promise!

I am currently working on a book about the Bunston Family and their descendants.  It is a follow up to the one I compiled back in 2000 - The Bunston Family: Past and Present.

The book is becoming huge! I'm still only working on the first draft and have a long way to go.

Apart from the Bunston name, other names that feature in the book are listed below.  Note that the list will grow as more of the story unfolds.  The family has spread far and wide, throughout the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand (so far).

Esther Emma Peadon

 

A small piece taken from my upcoming book - Bunston Family Revisited 

Esther was born in Lincoln around June, 1877.  She was just three years old at the time of the 1881 census.  At the time, she was living with her parents and sisters at 18 Stanley Street, St Botolph.

 Ten years later, Esther was now 13 and she worked as a domestic for her parents, helping her mother with the five younger children.  The family still lived in Stanley Street.  By 1901 Esther had moved out of her family home and the 22-year-old was now employed as a general servant for Frederick and Rebecca Belton.  They lived in Southport, Lancashire at 133 Duke Street.

 On September 20, 1909 Esther married John Wilfred Ardern at St Botolph’s Church.  John was born around January 1878 at Altrincham, Cheshire.  He was the son of Joseph Arden and Mary Jane Chandling.

 Before he married Esther, John worked as a butcher’s assistant lived with his parents and siblings at 55 Shakespeare Street, Southport.  This was only a few blocks away from where Esther lived and worked in Duke Street.

 John and Esther had at least one child together, a daughter named Dorothy.

 At the time of the 1911 census, John and Esther had been married for a year and their daughter was with them.  They lived at 99 Cemetery Road, Southport.  John was employed as a butcher’s foreman.

 John died at the Liverpool Stanley Hospital on October 28, 1936.  At the time of the 1939 register Esther was living alone at 189 Portland Street, Southport.  She was living on a widow’s pension.   Esther passed away 12 years after her husband on March 3, 1948 at the Southport Infirmary.  They are buried in the Duke Street Cemetery which is a stone’s throw away from where they lived and worked.

Esther's grandmother was Elizabeth Bunston who married Eli Peadon.

DNA results

 So I gave myself a Christmas present last year and got my DNA tested through Ancestry.com.  I'm still trying to work out everything, but there were no real surprises.

My parents are my parents, so that is good.  I have a friend that found out recently that he was a 0% match to his dad... awkward!

Also turns out I'm descended from the UK - as if we didn't already know.  So no secret Chinese, Indian, German, Russian ancestors... but I did get a few new connections for my tree and that is always good.

Ernest Waldgrave Bunstun to Susan Charlotte Tackaberry

Ernest was born in Moe, in the Gippsland area of Victoria.  He was the son of Henry Bunstun and grandson of William Bunstun.

After spending 1290 days serving in the AIF in France and Egypt, Ernest returned home and married his wartime sweetheart, Tot, at All Saints, East St Kilda on January 24 1920.

The announcement in the Australasian on Saturday February 28 1920 read:  

Bunstun - Tackaberry - On the 24th January 1920, at All Saints', East St Kilda, by the Rev E Thornton, Ernest Waldgrave (late 49th Bty AIF), eldest son of the late Henry Bunstun of Moe and Mrs Aitken, Linga, to Susan Charlotte (Tot), second daughter of the late Nicholas Tackaberry and Mrs Tackaberry, Yarragon.

Ern's brother, Henry, was the best man and Sarah Tackaberry was bridesmaid.

The couple made their home in the Mildura region of Victoria, settling into a house built by Ern's step father Robert Aitken in 1921.  15 years later in 1936 this house would be damaged by a cyclone.

They would go on to raise a family of four, living on the farm their whole lives. Tot passed away in 1951 and Ern died 20 years later in 1971.

Well it's not Saturday, but anyway I thought I'd share some Christmas / New Year items from the collection.  Hope you enjoy them... Happy 2019!

 An embroided postcard from World War I from my great grandfather's collection.  Wishing us a "Victorious New Year 1918".

The album is still packed away so I don't know if there is anything written on the back.  There are many of these such cards in the collection.

At the head of the table, to the left is my great grandfather, Percy Victor Nash.  To his right, my great grandmother, Georgina May Nash (nee Bunston).  Going around the table from the left with relationship to PV & GM Nash: Grandsons John and Graeme Morris; daughter Muriel Morris (nee Nash); son Percy Nash; grandson Brent Nash; daughter in law Hilda Nash (nee Smith) and granddaughter Eleanor Nash (married name Kissick).

Here is Sandria Butterworth and her little sister Katheryn, with the big man himself. Photo is circa 1950, likely taken in Manchester, England.

The girls would migrate to Australia with their parents, Samuel and Annie (nee Taylor).  Katheryn would go on to marry Barry Gratton and have three boys.  Many Santa photos later, I married the second of these three boys.  Making the darling little Katheryn my mother in law.

Some jolly good beards and a couple of wives!

Some of these pics have probably featured in numerous posts, sorry, but they keep fitting the bill.

 This first photo features the beard belonging to George Bunston, my great great grandfather.  As well as his beard, as seen here is George's wife Elizabeth Lyle (nee Thompson).

George arrived in Australia in 1855 from England at the age of 20.  I have no evidence that indicates the beard arrived with him, or appeared after he settled.  George was a farmer and carter, settling in the Skipton area in 1864.

This first picture was taken c 1889.

 We may not know if George's beard travelled from England with him, but it stuck with him until his death in 1923.

This second photo is of most of the family at the time of what may have been the first Bunston family reunion.  Held at the family property "Mayfield" near Skipton in 1921.

The beard in the third picture belongs to John Bunston, younger brother to George.

John was born in South Petherton, in 1849.  He married Louisa Brice in 1871.  Like his brother, George, John had ten children.  Around 1873 John, Louisa and baby daughter Lilly moved from Somerset to Wales.

Once in Wales John worked as a haulier and general labourer.

John passed away on November 11 1925.

 Here is another photo of a very fine beard, and just as fine wife.  The wife is the connection here as she is Mary Bunston, sister to George and John.  Mary came to Australia with her brother George in 1855.

This is a picture of Mary, seated on the right with her second husband, George Breadmore.  Standing is her daughter Elizabeth Susan, whose father Jacob (aka William) had died in 1874.  With Mary is their daughter, Alice Breadmore.  Mary was George's third wife and in total he had 15 children.

Mary and George lived in Rocky Lead near Dean in Victoria where George worked as a coach driver and labourer.  In later years he was a fruiterer.  George passed away on July 25 1900.

This fifth picture shows William Bunstun, uncle to the people mentioned above, with his son Henry, daughter in  law Susan and grandson Ernest.

Both father and son have wonderful beards on display.  This is the only known photo of William who came to Australia in 1855 with his wife Christiana (nee Tucker) and their daughter Mary Jane.  They settled in the Gippsland area of Victoria and it is not known if he ever crossed paths with his niece and nephew.  William passed away in 1906.

Henry, shown here with his beard and wife Susan, was born in 1856, shortly after his parents had arrived in Australia.  He lived in Moe, Victoria where he worked as a draper.  The photo above being of his store.

I'm not sure of all the circumstances, but Henry would later become an alcoholic.  He left his wife and children around 1900 and moved to Kalgoolie, Western Australia.  He would die in 1902 after passing out, drunk, and being run over by his horse and wagon.  Sadly, his youngest son, Charles, would suffer a similar fate.

Susan went on to marry Robert Aitken in 1905.  She moved from Moe, and her father in law William moved with her.

It is not known if Robert Aitken had a beard.
